Coming into Alignment

A conversation between Dr Pat Bacilli and Sarah Mane, author, broadcaster and founder of Conscious Confidence


Dr Pat:

We’re talking about this transition to adulthood.  It’s so important because there are consequences for both child and parents if we don’t teach this healthy, nurturing, powerful process.  I did some homework.  So, let’s just give a few facts. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. Forty million adults in the United States 18 years and older, that’s 18.1 percent of the adult population. Out of that number how many folks do you think actually try to do something about it?

So, if these principles are readily available then what’s the problem, what’s happening? Why are suicides at least in the state of Washington on the rise?  What is happening here? And what Sarah is talking about can help create a pathway to wellness.


It’s a very good question. In the past childhood was short because everyone in the family had to work and contribute.  That’s not true anymore.  Childhood has become longer.

But on a higher level the problem is misalignment. The ancient scriptures, the wisdom traditions tell us we are limitless. But do we live as limitless beings with universal consciousness?  If you take that natural limitlessness as true, then this needs to guide how we educate and guide young people into adulthood.  And then as adults that wisdom needs to guide how we live.

That’s the opening statement of my book. You start with the limitlessness, the absolute truth of who we are, and that is something to celebrate and be joyful about.

And yet there is a mismatch, a misalignment between the truth of limitlessness, and how we live our lives.

And coming into alignment is actually quite simple.  We did it every day with the children at school.  Our curriculum was based on providing for the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the children.

Alignment is the result of giving yourself the necessary food, exercise and rest on every level.  The physical body needs food, exercise and rest; nourishment, movement and time-out. It’s the same with the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.  Those bodies also need nourishment, good input and stimulation; they need exercise and work; and then they need rest. If you supply all of that you get into alignment.  You feel healthy and thriving and positive.  All the good things in life come to you naturally, and you have the strength and knowledge to handle the not-so-good things as they come up.

But my observation is that most of our time is spent dealing with the physical, with a bit of the mental and emotional when we can’t avoid it. The mind is all go-go-go, work-work-work, with very little proper rest, and very little proper nourishment. We only give the emotional body attention when things go awry, when things are out of kilter.  And there’s very little attention given to our spiritual needs, that core part of our being.  People seem almost unaware of it.

Spending long periods of time on social media is the mental and emotional equivalent of eating tons of fries and drinking gallons of soda. It’s junk food. It hasn’t any proper nourishment. In measure it’s an enjoyable diversion, but it isn’t a good basis for a healthy mental, emotional and spiritual diet.

Dr Pat:

Let me support you in this, because I will feel full if I eat a whole big bag of salty chips.  There’ll be a point that I will be like, Oh my Gosh!  But we don’t have that point with social media, we don’t know we are overdosing. That’s the difference and that’s why what you’re talking about is so important.  We don’t have an alarm clock like we do in our bodies.


Yes, we just go to sleep, we are unaware. We don’t know what it’s like to have good mental food, quality, nourishing material like good literature and good music. That’s good food for the mind.  And then good exercise for the mind is debate and discussion hearing opposing views and thinking about what has been said.  This current trend of shutting out divergent views from our life weakens the mind.  To actually have a debate, to hear some different viewpoints, it’s like working your mental muscles. Any gym trainer will tell you that you need to give your muscles some resistance to build them up, make them strong. It’s the same with the mental work. Don’t be threatened by opposing views, seek them out.  There’s another side to every story. When was the last time we had an open friendly discussion with someone who holds opposite opinions? That’s why we teach kids debating skills in schools to exercise their minds.

And then rest for the mind.  Proper mental rest like meditation, mindfulness, going for a walk and just experiencing nature.  Actually stopping the constant thinking.  You need to have a break.

It’s the same with the emotional realm. Good quality music, positive emotions, good feelings.  That’s like eating good food.  The Alignment Guide helps you make your own list of food, exercise and rest for the body, the mind, the emotions, and the spirit.  I put the Alignment Guide together because of the pressures and misalignment people are experiencing, resulting in anxieties, fears and addictions. I asked myself, Why is everyone wracked with fear? We all experience some fear, of course, I do too, but when I feel it rise in me I address it from stillness rather than let it overtake me.

I also see problems with lack of resilience. That was never an issue when I was growing up.  I suppose because in some respects things were a little tougher, and we came out being more resilient. And even then people my age had it a lot easier than previous generations. I mean, goodness me, my father flew Spitfire planes in the Second World War when he was 19. And I asked him, “Dad were you frightened?”  He said “We were terrified” but they still got in the planes because it needed to be done.  He told me, “We used to crack jokes over the radio so we were laughing uproariously as we patrolled over the Pacific.  Or we used to sing songs at the top of our lungs.”  He said it stopped the fear from taking over.

So nowadays you’ve got the lack of resilience, and you’ve got addictions, anxieties, depression, feelings of victimhood, anger, mental health issues, eating disorders and of course suicide.

This ancient wisdom provides the solutions for these things.  It always has.  We just need to address it, and make it relevant to today.
